Confirming rumors that have been circulating in techno music circles for the past several months, Detroits Free Press is reporting today that Richie Hawtin, perhaps the most successful American electronic music DJ/producer has contributed an original composition entitled "9:20" to the opening ceremonies of the Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy tonight.
The piece, a collaboration with Italian choreographer Enzo Cosimi features the popular Italian dancer Roberto Bollet and marks perhaps the most high-profile occassion ever to feature one of Detroit, Michigan's techno visionaries. Hawtin is quoted as saying that tonight's performance will likely place his stark, minimal composition in front of "more people at once than probably the rest of my career combined," despite a clutch of albums, singles and acclaimed mix CDs which he's released since breaking onto the electronic music scene in the early 1990s.
