Autista

Autista is a collective of Brazilian artists, photographers, musicians, writers, filmmakers, and even a few "homeless soccer players" that live all over the place, from Sao Paolo to San Francisco. Founded by SF-based Brasileiro David Charles who just recently left our fine corporate parent BSSP for a new gig at AKQA San Francisco, Autista keeps him connected to his peers scattered across the globe and back home and also provides a platform for presenting some very impressive creative work from Brazilian artists while also raising a bit of money to help autistic children back home.

The first project for Autista is an incredible art show featuring four talents who have never before shown in the United States. Opening in mid-June at SF's Ar+Space Gallery. The show features not only collective member Irmaos Por Escolha but works from Ramon Martins, Sesper, Elisa Sassi, and Estandelau.

Last time EMERGE went back to the mothership for a visit, Charles took us for a quick peek at some of the work, including some very cool screenprints, canvasses, and even some unusual multimedia pieces involving constructions of paint cans and wood covering in mind-bending painting. Straddling the worlds of traditional fine art and more street-oriented stuff, Autista are definitely onto something interesting.

Even if you can't make it to the Bay for their debut US show, keep an eye on this collective. I'm sure they've got lots more up their sleeves for the future.
