Capitol Hill Staffers manipulate Wikipedia entries

02/08/2006 11:14:00 PM
According to a story that ran in last Saturday's Washington Post and has been burning up the blogosphere, Capitol Hill staffers have been feverishly editing the Wikipedia entries of congressional personnel to remove unflattering details, amend broken campaign promises and even to insert defamatory information about political rivals.

The discovery prompted Wikipedia to block certain Washington IP addresses including all associated with the House Of Representatitves from logging in and making changes to the site's pages.

In an interesting twist to this somewhat below-the-radar technopolitical scandal, Wikipedia's sister venture Wikinews have done a more vigorous investigative job to find out exactly who is making such potentially problematic alterations to the open-source encyclopedia than traditional news outlets, including the Washington Post which first broke the story.
