It's a rare occassion when a television spot enhances the trendy piece of music licensed to serve as soundtrack. Yet that is precisely what happens with this new Crayola spot which uses "Sweet Road" from Animal Collective's 2004 breakout album Sung Tongs.
The Brooklyn-based band's brand of freaky, folky psychedelia makes for a surprisingly good backdrop for the spot, which features a bunch of kids drawing with and chatting about Crayola's new Color Explosion marker. And as musical uber-snobs Pitchfork Media point out, even indie rock purists would be hard pressed to hate on children at play.
Responding to fan criticism on the Collected Animals fan forum(site seems to be down at the moment), band member Avey Tare wrote:
??hey? yes Noah and i ok??d our song being in that commercial. They sent us a version so we could see it before hand and found it really funny and i checked up some on Crayola just to make sure they weren't that bad of a company which from the info i gathered seems like they are ok.
I wouldn't expect to be seeing our songs in too many other commercials. We are pretty careful about it. We turn down mostly everything (a lot of beer commercials actually?always asking for "Sweet Road"?go figure) and don't feel the need to expose our music that way. This particular instance seemed cool cause it involved something for kids and something which had a big impact at least on me when i was young, that being Crayola markers and crayons.?
It appears you don't have Flash installed.
