Ich Liebe Dich

First off, please accept EMERGE's apologies for the lack of posts this week. We've had severe internet access issues thanks to the fine folks at Time Warner Cable of New York, who took nearly three days to restore cable tv, broadband internet and digital phone service to our entire section of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Not so convenient, but it's been a sobering reminder of how reliant we've become on all this gadgetry to get anything done...

That said, not having a computer freed up a bunch of time this past week to go out and soak up some of the incredible stuff going on in New York City. For instance, last night, EMERGE checked out a very cool photography exhibition at the Andre Schlechtriem Gallery in Chelsea entitled Ich Liebe Dich or "I Love You." Based on an obscure book of photographs of the same name shot by the not-so-well-known Dirk Alvermann in 1979, the exhibition features the work of three contemporary German photographers who explore similar personal and politcal themes as the namesake of this show. Curated by Jorg Koch of the superb arts biannual 032C, works by Viktoria Binschtok, Oliver Helbig, and Heinz Peter Knes examine subjects as diverse as homosexuality, the worn interiors of a Berlin unemployment office, and the folks squatting in the ruins of WWII-era Nazi government buildings.

Afterwards, 032C partnered up with the influential Deitch Projects, LA's Peres Projects, and the Whitney Museum of Art to throw a post-opening party in honor of hotshot artstar Terence Koh [NSFW] at the shit-hot nightspot 205 Club. The DJs included fashion designer Ben Cho, artist and recent EMERGE subject Dash Snow, Leo Fitzpatrick, and Vancouver based musician/visual artist Jeremy Shaw. To say this party was packed to the gills would be something of an understatement. It was the epitome of an NYC hipster clusterfuck, which is to say it was one for the history books...
