Having seen Cabinet Magazine around over the past couple years, EMERGE was really a little taken aback this morning when we stumbled across the print rag's website and started poking around. Billed as "a magazine of art and culture", Cabinet is not your average hyperstylized lifestyle publication. Published quarterly, Cabinet has been coming out since 2000, when it won accolades as the Best New Magazine in the American Library Association's Library Journal and it's easy to understand why.
Not tied down to the monthly publication schedule of most magazines, Cabinet focuses not on what is newest and most aggressively promoted like so many other mags, but instead explores a diverse array of subjects blending "the popular appeal of an arts periodical, the visually engaging style of a design magazine, and the in-depth exploration of a scholarly journal" to quote their own description. For instance, their website is currently featuring films made by Thomas Edison, a bizarre story about Albert Einstein and his dream of working as a cobbler, an essay on prosthetics, and a history of sampling to name just a few articles. Take that trendy magazines about nothing!
A bit cerebral for sure, Cabinet manages to be both incredibly engaging and beautifully assembled, with some very strong writing and an editorial approach far more adventurous than even the most courageous magazines. We can't wait to hit a good magazine shop and pick up the most recent print edition.
