New York-based Flavorpill Productions and San Francisco's Current have joined forces to create original content for broadcast on Current relating to the worldview and editorial selections of Flavorpill's hydraheaded online publishing empire.
While arts coverage has existed on Current, this partnership is looking to bring a more sophisticated leading edge perspective to television, a possibility that could really inject a bit of razzle dazzle to Current's innovative but mildly hokey programming.
It's interesting that basically the brief to VC2 producers (to use Current's lingo) is not terribly different than it's always been. It's the idea that instead of reaching out to do-gooders and amateur content creators this time, Current and Flavorpill are seeking the trendsetters, the opinion-leaders. In other words, they are hoping to start cribbing some of the insight and talent that typically have the traditional media at their disposal. Just what this means for user created content is unclear.
According to the announcement page on Current's website, the Flavorpill/Current collaboration is seeking "pods" focused specifically on a couple of areas to help launch things:
Art: They are looking for explorations of how creatives are making their art. The brief clearly states they "dig video about art, but we're not looking for 'video art.'"
Event: The idea here is to bring an event covered by Flavorpill to life through documentary, or better yet to play Flavorpill and cover an event that should have been on one of their weekly emails.
Music: Current and Flavorpill want to get a grassroots view of the artists and labels setting the tone for the underground today. The idea is to explore what is just starting to percolate now but is sure to boil over into the mainstream tomorrow.
Culture: Show the world something new, something undiscovered, something fresh.
