EMERGE Recommends Part 4

10/11/2006 01:49:00 PM
Since we missed out on an EMERGE recommends piece last week due to a trip out West for M Squared organized by Influx main man and mentor Ed Cotton, there will be two Recommends posts this week.

This collection of links comes courtesy of Gordon Harrison Hull a fine artist and designer based in New York, but with tentacles spread to Paris, Tokyo, Stockholm, Barcelona and beyond thanks to his involvement in Surface To Air, a collective whose work ranges from site specific installations, clothing design, print making, jewelry, graphic design, publishing, curation and even full scale collaborations with the likes of Marc Jacobs.

In addition to his work with S2A, which has included high profile work for Adidas, Reebok, Nike, North Face, Vice Recordings, Feist, Priestess as well as the curation and publication of the books Pour La Victoire, Flip The Script, and a book with pages comprised of hand made artist-edition t shirts, Hull is tremendously prolific on his own. Working both from S2A's downtown studio as well as his family's apple farm Upstate, Hull is inspired by the rituals, mysticism and craft of Africa, which he has transformed into an aesthetic he calls "lo-fi magic," often conducted via an alter ego known cryptically as The Great Belghazi.

Here are some recommendations from Hull himself: artists of note, a book, and an online resource which has undoubtedly informed much of his own recent work, which includes photography, film, and drawings.

1. Cai Quo-Qiang

2. The Conjuring Arts Research Center

3. Trickster Makes This World by Lewis Hyde

4. Phoebe Washburn

5. Yuri Masnyj
