Windows Of Hope

Photographer Thomas Brodin is a young Parisian transplant to New York City. Based in Brooklyn, he is a prolific talent with an extensive CV of published commercial and editorial work for the likes of Nokia, Krug Champagne, Volkswagon, Teen Vogue, Glamour, Wallpaper and many more.

Unlike the point-and-shoot hipsters that seem to dominate the up-and-coming photography scene (we mean you Mark The Cobrasnake!), Brodin prefers the more sedate, contemplative and technically rigorous side of portraitry and documentary work. With the fresh eyes of an artist who relocated to New York well after 9/11, his recent series of images of survivors, widows of victims, Ground Zero and sites of tribute to those who died in the terror attacks are an emotionally powerful exploration of the lasting repercussions that fateful day have exacted upon New York. His shots of abandoned spaces around Brooklyn as well as some fortuitous before-, during- and after-shots of the massive fire that consumed the Greenpoint Market Terminal building in Spring 2006 juxtapose more mundane forms of urban decay and blight against the devastation of the terror attacks.

All in all his Windows of Hope project makes for powerful viewing and points up that Brooklyn has a formidable new talent in it's midst. A quick click around Brodin's website provides ample support for this position. Dude is incredibly talented and has a keen eye for finding the beauty in the mundane. Here's hoping Brodin decides to stick around for a while.
