An old format to promote the hip-hops future

02/06/2006 12:52:00 PM
Recently transplanted to LA from his native Detroit, ailing hip-hop producer J Dilla (better known as JayDee) has issued a limited run picture disc 7" to promote his second solo artist album and his debut artist album for indie hip-hop mainstay Stonesthrow Records.

Hailed as Pharrell Williams of the Neptunes favorite producer, Dilla has been behind some of hip-hop's most important artists and releases (Tribe Called Quest, Common, Slum Village, Jaylib) yet remains a virtual unknown. His latest record Donuts was recorded both in his own studio and via a portable recording set up, which he used during several extended hospital visits for an undisclosed ailment over the past couple of years.

In a genre plagued by cliche and identikit artists, J Dilla offers hope for America's last great musical creation as we move further into 2006.
