It didn't happen before that article got printed in the New York Times, but it's an interesting side note to the whole buzz surrounding streetwear mini-empire aNYthing, that the store/label/phenomenon of Downtown cool has leveraged it's visibility on the hipster circuit to get The Virgins signed to Atlantic Records.
Functioning as the de facto house band for the shop, located on Hester Street on the Lower East Sde, the four piece band makes infectious indie songs that blend the lo-fi fuzz of Pavement with the tuneful simplicity of New York bands like The Strokes. While their myspace page features a number of demo songs, no word yet on when they'll finish proper recordings or get something into the market legitimately.
Whenever that happens, it will be interesting to see if aNYthing's brand can transcend the hipster streetwear scene to capitalize on its cool in the world of rock n roll.
Time will tell...
