Disco Revival

For years, people have been waxing rhapsodic about the funk music revivalists like the EMERGE -approved Truth and Soul Recordings crew. These guys may not have originated that gritty boom bap overlayed by funky chicken scratch guitar, smokey organ and searing hot horns, but they (and their kindred spirits around the world) have helped keep the groove going by replicating not just the songwriting but the recording techniques of years gone by alive. The results are some deeply anachronistic sounding music.

Presently, however there is another revival just bubbling up from the underground. On the heels of several years of modern "neo-disco" production courtesy of artists like Metro Area, DFA Records, and Norway's Feedelity imprint, disco has reentered the cultural dialogue. The documentary Maestro has become a cult phenomenon and several books published over the past five or six years have helped shed some much deserved attention onto this often-maligned sound.

Adding to this snowballing fascination with the roots of disco (as opposed to the sound of it's commercial counterpart as popularized by the Bee Gees and Saturday Night Fever) is Escort a 12 piece band that have just released what would appear to be the first disco revival track recorded using traditional techniques rather than cutting edge audio production gear. "Starlight" is so true to it's inspirations that most people fail to realize it isn't another obscure artifact of the 70's.

Adding to the excitement the single is already generating in DJ circles internationally, Escort is making its live debut this week at the always cutting-edge Tribeca Grand Hotel. EMERGE is gonna be there, double knit slacks and butterfly collar in full effect.
