Tiny Sticks Make Big Sounds

Dance music has gotten pretty interesting lately. While the big room boompty boompty stuff continues to thrive in it's own little world, stuff along the fringes of purist dance music keeps on mixing and melding with more conventional indie rock and leftfield sounds and is finding new audiences and fans all the time.

While much of this crossover began with the dreaded Electroclash scene in New York, London and Berlin back in 2001 or so, the overproduced, gimmicky sound has faded from view in the years since. Luckily, the throngs of fashionable young things and formerly rockist folks it brought into the dance music fold have continued to explore and experiment and there is a whole new cadre of DJs and producers who have picked up where Fischerspooner and Larry Tee left off.

From the dance punk and disco sounds of DFA Records to the minimal techno of Kompakt and the cosmic disco vibes of Belgium's always-excellent Eskimo Records, there is a lot more dance music for people who normally hate the stuff to get into.

Joining the ranks of labels churning out inventive and weird dance jams for kids who would never cop to liking Paul Oakenfold or even the Chemical Brothers is London's Tiny Sticks, a new imprint specializing in the kinds of quirky, funky records that set discriminating dancefloors alight, from Tokyo to Toronto and points inbetween.

With no distinct modus operandi in place beyond releasing quirky and cool music "from the studios, laptops and garages of producers, writers & chancers from across the globe" Tiny Sticks has nevertheless gained a reputation as one of the hottest new labels in England, thanks in small part for the ardent support of DFA-related artists Shit Robot and Emerge band The Juan Maclean as well as big time record spinners like Trevor Jackson, Damian Lazarus and DJ T from Emerge imprint du jour Get Physical Music.
