Beastie Boys Really Running With

Yeah yeah, Emerge knows "me media" generally describes Web 2.0 web content and all that good stuff, but "consumer created content" just doesn't sound right when we aren't talking about an advertisement...

Extending the participatory logic behind their audience-filmed concert movie Awesome! I Fucking Shot That, Mike D, MCA and Ad Rock are inviting fans to download a slew of acapellas off of their website to create their very own remixes.

The interesting thing about this is that there is no Creative Commons license involved, no contest per se, no upload feature. It's simply a giveaway of Beasties vocal tracks for people to do whatever they please. Make a song, make a voicemail message, make fun of somebody.

So the whole project may be a bit aimless, but in terms of really handing the reigns over to public and letting things go where they will, this is a courageous move. Emerge is curious to see how this stuff pans out.

To give a taste of what's possible, here is a bootleg mix from last year by NYC DJs Rub N Tug putting the acapella from "An Open Letter To NYC" over an edit of "Macho City" by the Steve Miller Band. RNT are good friends with the Beasties, so this was done and released with their knowledge and consent. As for anything made from the website, who knows?
