Photographer Peter Sutherland's Pedal

NYC photographic wunderkind Peter Sutherland has a resume that far outpaces his 27 years, from working as Director of Photography on the documentary Stoked to publishing his first book of portraits, Autograf at 25 years old. One of his earliest endeavors, however, was a film about New York City's bicycle messengers, which he shot and screened at SXSW back in 2001.

Finally, his film is getting a DVD release as part of Pedal, a book of bicyclist portraits the gearhead shot at last years World Cycle Courier Championships. Published by the always ace PowerHouse Books, the monograph/DVD package is not just a testament to Sutherland's skills as a lensman but serves as an affectionate peek into one of urban America's most curious subcultures.

To see Pedal in it's natural habitat, New Yorkers should attend this year's Bicycle Film Festival, which is screening the film twice as part of a documentary shorts program curated by Tokion Magazine on May 10th and 11th.

EMERGE will not only be there but is also DJing the Friday night BFF party at Fontana's on Eldridge Street alongside SF DJ legend Ted Shred at a party also sponsored by Tokion.

To see some clips from Pedal, watch Sutherland's reel, which includes some segments.
